5 Local Beer Clubs That You Should Join

Posted by Amanda Erskine • Where To Drink

Are you looking for a new hobby? Are you looking to be a part of something bigger than you? Do you love trying new beer? If you answered yes to any or all of those questions, then you’re next step is to join a local, Charlotte beer club.

What’s a Beer Club?

Sometimes also known as a “Mug Club” a beer club is a program that certain restaurants and breweries will offer to support your passion about trying new beers, or to encourage you to order something other than your go-to Michelob Ultra. They also are a fantastic way to support the local and national craft beer industry, by ordering beers from some of our Charlotte breweries, or trying one from an unknown brewery in Mt. Airy, Maryland.

So where can you find some of these beer clubs?

  1. Flying Saucer, U.F.O Club

Located in the Terraces at University City, this popular gastropub offers a program called the U.F.O. Club.

How Do I Join?

In order to join and become a BEERKNURD®, there is an $18.00 fee. This can only be purchased at the Flying Saucer.

What Do I Get?

You’ll get a free BEERKNURD® t-shirt, as well as a personal card that you will be able to swipe every time you visit, and that will keep track of each beer you drink. Dedicated beer drinkers who drink 200+ beers, will have their names immortalized in the Ring of Honor, and other fun prizes.

  2. Billy Jack’s Shack Bone Club

At this NoDa restaurant with a dive bar vibe, you can join the Bone Club.

How Do I Join?

In order to join, next time you stop in Billy Jack’s for some of their addictive sticky nugs and a beer or two, is to ask your waiter or waitress about joining the Bone Club. They will bring you a sheet of paper with 100 slots on it for you to enter the beer you tried, and the date it was consumed. At the end of the meal, they will then take your sheet from you and store it behind the bar until the next time you come in. AKA, no cheating!

What Do I Get?

Once you reach 100 different beers, you’ll get an exclusive biker-esque Bone Club shirt. If you’re one of the first 20 individuals to do so, you’ll get your name engraved on a mug that will then hang over the bar for eternity.

  3. Duckworth’s Grill & Taphouse HopMan Beer Club

With 5 different locations in the Charlotte and surrounding area, there are multiple opportunities to add to your beer collection as a member of the HopMan Beer Club.

How Do I Join?

To join, just visit your favorite Duckworth’s location and request a HopMan Beer Club card from your waiter or waitress. You’ll then be able to set-up your Beer Club Profile online in order to start receiving points!

What Do I Get?

For each beer that you drink and swipe on your Beer Club card, you will receive one point. For each point-marker that you reach, you’ll be eligible for a new and increasingly more valuable reward. The first reward that you can receive is a free HopMan t-shirt once you hit 25 points, and the grand prize is a $250 gift card of your choice to either Duckworth’s Grill & Taphouse, or The Cellar at Duckworth’s, as well as a Golden Nameplate, with your name on it, that will be added to their Full Pint Plaques at ALL of their locations. In order to be eligible for this top-reward, you will have to reach 2000 points, aka drink 2,000 beers. We believe in you.

  4. Sycamore Brewing Mug Club

This uber-popular South End brewery offers a Monday Mug-Club.

How Do I Join?

To join, you’ll have to purchase a ceramic 24-ounce mug that costs $30. You can purchase this online or in the taproom.

What Do I Get?

Each Monday, visit Sycamore Brewing, with your Mug Club mug, and enjoy full mug pours at the low cost of a pint. This will run you $6-$6.50 and is eligible for a pour of beer, or any of their Wild Blossom Ciders.

*While this isn’t a beer club where you can rack up points, it’s still an exclusive club that you can join and enjoy some delicious and thirst-quenching benefits!

  5. The Protagonist Clubhouse Curious Beer Club (PCBC)

NoDa’s first clubhouse and new brewery, offers a beer club for curious beer drinkers to taste and review their concoctions.

How Do I Join?

To join the PCBC, all you have to do is download the Protagonist app, found in the app store for both iPhone and Android.

What Do I Get?

To track your beers and get credit for them, you’ll have to snap a picture of your receipt within the app to show the proof of purchase. You’ll then be eligible to receive member benefits that will be announced within the app. Think, the Starbucks app, or MyPanera.

Additionally, within the app, you’ll be able to leave beer reviews and tasting notes for each of the beers that you try!

*Please note that beer clubs can only be joined if you are 21-years of age. Also, please drink responsibly
