Camouflaged in a small brick storefront directly next to popular market, NoDa Bodega, lies a hidden gem that has passion for playing, pouring out of its doors.
If you’re not a disc golfer, there’s a chance you haven’t heard of Another Round Disc Golf before, but if you are, then you know that this is the place where all disc golfers gather.
While the shop originally opened under different ownership, the previous owners of the disc golf shop, made the tough decision to move and pursue other things, leaving the store needing new management, which was an opportunity that the new owners felt just couldn’t be passed up. The storefront itself opened in late October and on May 1st, 2019, Kyle Deck and Joseph Phillips opened the doors as the new owners of the newly-named, Another Round Disc Golf + Tap Room.
Co-Owners and college roommates, Deck and Phillips, along with their wives, have been playing the sport for years, and have since been dreaming of taking their love for the sport and turning it into a career somehow. Already heavily involved in the local disc golf community and inspired by the presented opportunity and Charlotte entrepreneurial spirit, Deck, along with Phillips, quit their previous positions, and turned their passion for the sport into a full-time job. The foundation for the concept of the shop being a disc golf equipment store, was already laid by the previous owners, when Deck and Phillips came in. The store even already served beer on tap to its patrons, but this wasn’t something advertised prior. With a little bit of marketing insight and a desire to grow awareness of the space, Deck and Phillips added “taproom” to the end of the store’s name, and have been doing a lot of outreach marketing to try and grow the disc golf community.
Since their takeover, the space has seen more traffic than they were expecting to see in the first month of operations, and they plan on continuing to increase the number of people who call themselves regulars.
The Disc Golf community is a tight knit one, and the main goal of the sport is to continue growing it. Charlotte is one of the largest disc golf communities in the country with over 600 members in the Charlotte Disc Golf Club,. There are currently 15 courses within 20-30 miles, with the closest to the store being Kilbourne and Sugaw Creek Park, and our city also hosted the 2018 PDGA Amateur Disc Golf World Championship.
Currently, the Charlotte Disc Golf Club has both their board and general meetings every month in the space, and the rest of the time, Another Round is a hub for all disc golfers.
Deck says that his favorite part of owning the store is “getting to talk with all of the new players that come through” Already in the 5 weeks that the store has been open, he has seen a handful of returning players that first came to the store as novices.
“Everyone that plays disc golf is immediately hooked, and I’ve never met someone who doesn’t like it,” enthused Deck. “Disc Golf is as much fun as you can possibly have, it’s just the coolest thing.”
