Gold District Hidden Gems- Max and Lola Bodega

Posted by Laura Gregory • Southend Nightlife

Southend’s Gold District is undergoing rapid development and is quickly becoming a hot spot for some of Charlotte’s newest restaurants, breweries, and bars. Staples to the area like Unknown Brewing and Yume are now sharing their space along Mint Street with Bardo, Pasta & Provisions, and a hidden gem of a bodega, Max & Lola. Easily identifiable by their sprawling front patio and beautiful outdoor murals, Max & Lola Bodega is full of surprises. On the eve of their first anniversary (they opened for business in August 2018), we’re highlighting 5 great things about this Gold District gem (get it?).

  1. They are SUPER dog-friendly. In fact, the bodega was named after the two rescue dogs of owner Holly Rodriguez (Max and Lola. Duh). Not only do they offer a front patio that is great for people-watching along Mint St., they have a shaded backyard with lights, tables, and plenty of room for pups to run around.

Their dog-friendly (it’s off-leash!) fenced-in back patio.

  1. It’s an art-lover’s dream. The famous outdoor mural is by Rosalia Torres-Weiner, and they have art for sale often. Go take a picture and get your wings, and see the artist’s rendition of the bodega’s namesakes. (Search #golddistrict on Instagram for snaps of the mural).

  1. They have more than just wine & beer! They have komubcha, coffee, snacks, and…

  2. CBD. In fact, Max & Lola prides itself on being Charlotte’s first CBD cocktail bar. What does a CBD cocktail entail, you may ask? CBD (cannabidiol, which is a legal compound that has been shown to have many holistic health benefits) mixed with delicious concoctions to make a truly unique drink experience.

  1. They host so many events, including trivia every Thursday at 8:00 PM, wine tastings, yoga, and more.

All in all, Max & Lola Bodega is one of the Gold District’s hidden gems, because it offers way more than you’d expect from a traditional bodega. Speaking of, I didn’t even mention their resident food truck, Tacosaurus! They are open Tuesday & Wednesday from 12PM to 10PM, Thursday from 12PM to 11PM, Friday and Saturday from 12PM to 12AM, and Sunday from 12PM to 8PM (closed Mondays). For more info and details on upcoming events, visit them on Facebook, Instagram, and their website.
